It is a foundation (FBU), established in 1953 as a non-profit NGO. It is an institution that works in rural development projects that aim at strengthening human capacities, favoring the proper management of productive resources and environmental conservation. The foundation also runs a volunteer program in the province of Napo, Ecuador. FBU projects have as their driving force the improvement of production from an agro-ecological approach, protection of micro-watersheds and forests and environmental education. The FBU promotes, through its action plan, the participation of communities and local population in processes of construction and strengthening of their identities. From its first steps, the FBU gave importance to the issue of education of leaders in the rural sectors and founded schools for rural and indigenous children. Towards the end of the 70’s, the FBU affirmed its commitment to the marginal social sectors, women, peasants, indigenous people who were fighting for a more dignified life and for the right to the land. By the mid-80s, it was carrying forward proposals for integral development in several provinces of the country. The 1990s represented, within the institutional trajectory, a period of reformulation of policies and strategies. It incorporates renewed visions of social development that take into account the new social, economic and political conditions. The FBU manages local development projects with local governments, strengthens the initiatives of indigenous and peasant organizations, and trains leaders to promote social development proposals in their localities. Our actions aim to defend the existence of peasant agriculture in the face of the processes of concentration of land ownership and the destruction of natural resources caused by the extractive logic of large companies; As opposed to the homogenization of consumption patterns and the marginalization of public investments towards the rural sector. From this perspective, we enhance the management of the resources available on their farms and locality, their knowledge and organizational capacity. We are guided by the principles of interculturality, dialogue of knowledge, respect for nature, community participation and consensus. The FBU is attended by technicians, specialists and promoters who have knowledge and experience in various areas: social promotion, agroecology, environmental education, micro enterprises, alternative energies and natural resource management that can boost the arrival of tourists, such as the famous hot springs of Papallacta. We are currently promoting projects in various geographic areas of Ecuador, in the northern highlands, in the central highlands and in the western subtropics. Other programs that the FBU has are: environmental education for young people, forest nursery network, volunteer program, and soon the commercialization of farm products from Papallacta, a small town in the province of Napo.
